Accessory Structure Size Calculator

The accessory structure size calculator helps you figure out how much square footage you're allowed to use for detached accessory structures (like garages, sheds, and outbuildings) on your residential lot in Fergus Falls.

Here's how to use it:

Select your zoning district. If you don't know your zone, the calculator links directly to the city zoning map. If you still can't find it, call or email the Community Development office: (218) 332-5427 or planning@fergusfallsmn.gov.
Enter your lot size in square feet. This field only appears if you're in R-1, R-2, R-3, or R-4. R-A gets a flat 5,000 sq ft allowance regardless of lot size. Your lot's square footage is in Otter Tail County GIS records; the calculator contains a link.
Enter any existing detached accessory structure square footage. If you already have a garage or shed, enter its footprint in the calculator. The calculator subtracts that from your allowance so you can see what's left to build.

The results show your maximum allowed square footage and your remaining capacity after existing structures. If you're already at or over the limit, it tells you that, too.

Required property line setbacks in R-A and R-1: 5 ft
Required property line setbacks in R-2, R-3, and R-4: 3 ft
Height: Shall not exceed 19 feet or the height of the primary structure, whichever is greater.
Building placement: Side or rear yard only; 5 ft from primary structure.
Building materials: Matching or better façade and materials of the primary structure.
